Johan Elverskog studied Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University (Bloomington, USA, MA in 1995, Ph.D. in 2000). In 2000, he joined the Department of Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University (Dallas, Texas, USA) as an Assistant Professor, became Associate Professor in 2006 and was promoted to Full Professor in 2010. His research has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies, the Ford Research Foundation, and the Mellon Foundation. Moreover, he was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University in 2011/2012 and at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in 2007/2008.
Johan Elverskog specialises in the history of Inner Asia, especially Buddhism. Among his many publications, his latest book Buddhism and Islam on the Silk Road (2011: ebook/ 2013: paper edition) was a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2010 and was also the winner of the 2011 Award for Excellence in the Historical Study of Religion from the American Academy of Religion. Other important recent publications are: “China and the New Cosmopolitanism” in Sino-Platonic Papers and “Fuzzy Pluralism: The Case of Buddhism and Islam” in Common Knowledge.
During his fellowship with us, he will investigate a project entitled ‘The Mongol Empire and the History of Religion’.
