Andreas Bendlin teaches Roman History in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto at Mississauga and in the Graduate Program in the Department of Classics at the University of Toronto. Since 2009 he is also Director of the Collaborative Program in Ancient Greek and Roman History which is a major cooperation with York University. Before taking up his post at UTM in 2005 he held a Junior Research Fellowship at Brasenose College in Oxford from 1996-99. He taught Classics and Roman History at the University of Oxford and the University of Potsdam in Germany before moving to the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Erfurt. Teaching invitations have taken him to the University of Cape Town in South Africa and to the Universitá di Siena in Italy.

Andreas Bendlin’s research focuses on religion in Greco-Roman antiquity, with a particular emphasis on the religions of Rome and the Roman Empire. He is also working on Roman social, cultural and literary history. He has written numerous articles in these fields, covering topics like ancient associations, cognitive aspects of ritual and religion, divination and oracles, polytheism and religious pluralism. His current research projects include a monograph on the religious cultures in Late Republican Roman society.
